Summer is coming, which means outdoor dining and entertainment spaces are about to get a workout. There are so many options for your outdoor space, beyond a simple table, chairs and barbecue. Here are our top tips for how to design the ultimate outdoor living space.

Make it functional

It could be an outdoor kitchen, or an additional dining area, but the best use of your outdoor space is to make it functional. Consider it an extra room in your home. What are you missing? Do you love to entertain? Would you like somewhere for the kids to play? Do you enjoy outdoor living and dining?

Create a seamless transition

Sliding glass doors are a great way to open the space and make it an extension of your home. There are lots of options for doors, but if you have the space a wall of sliding doors will really give that seamless transition from indoor to outdoor.

Make it match

Consistent flooring between the indoor and outdoor spaces will make it look and feel like it’s one area instead of two. Timber is always a great option of outdoor areas, but tiles can also work really well too.

Make is useful for all seasons

If you want to use your outdoor space all year around, you need to be prepared, especially if your based in Melbourne like us! If you are able to enclose your indoor space, such as an alfresco area, incorporating some sort of heating and cooling is a great option. You could consider adding a firepit or gas heater for winter too.

Install lighting

You should never forget the lighting for your outdoor space – it’s a great place to incorporate both functional and decorative lighting. The right lighting can create any atmosphere, maybe it’s cozy, maybe it’s a party feel. String lights will create that cozy feel, overhead lights are great for outdoor dining and kitchen areas.

The garden surrounding the outdoor space provides great opportunity for some feature lighting. You could consider lighting the edging of paths, and garden beds, and lighting up or down walls and fences. You could highlight features such as plants, a tree, or a garden sculpture.
